CHANG CHUN CHEMICALS
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a water-based synthetic polymer made from the hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate. Polyvinyl alcohol has the idealized formula [CH2CH(OH)]n It is a water-soluble polymer that has a high molecular weight and is widely used in many industrial applications due to its unique properties such as excellent film-forming ability, flexibility, and high tensile strength. PVA is available in different grades and can be produced in both fully hydrolyzed and partially hydrolyzed forms.
Types of Polyvinyl Alcohol
Fully Hydrolyzed PVA: Fully hydrolyzed PVA is the most common type of PVA used in the industry. It has a high degree of hydrolysis, which means that most of the acetate groups have been replaced with hydroxyl groups. It has excellent water solubility, film-forming properties, good adhesion, and making it ideal for many applications.
Partially Hydrolyzed PVA: Partially hydrolyzed PVA has a lower degree of hydrolysis than fully hydrolyzed PVA. It is less water-soluble and has lower film-forming properties. However, it has better oil and solvent resistance than fully hydrolyzed PVA, making it suitable for applications where exposure to oils or solvents is expected.
Uses and Applications of Polyvinyl Alcohol
PVA has a wide range of applications in various industries such as adhesives, construction, foundry chemicals, paper, packaging, personal care products, tablets & seed coatings, and the textiles industry
Adhesives: PVA is used as an adhesive in the woodworking industry. It is also used as glue for paper, cardboard, and fabric.
Construction: PVA is used in the construction industry as a binder for cement and concrete. It improves the strength and durability of the cement and concrete.
Foundry Chemicals: PVA is used as a binder material in foundry chemicals.
Paper Industry: PVA is used in the paper industry as a sizing agent binder and coating agent for paper products. It is used in the production of high-quality paper products such as glossy magazine paper and photographic paper.
Packaging: PVA is used in the packaging industry as a coating agent for packaging materials. It provides excellent barrier properties against moisture and oxygen, which helps to preserve the quality of the packaged products.
Personal Care Products: PVA is used in personal care products such as hair gels, shampoos, and lotions. It acts as a thickening agent and provides a smooth, silky texture to the products.
Tablet & Seed Coatings: When tablets & seeds are coated with Poly Vinyl Alcohol they are protected by PVOH Film
Textile Industry: PVA is used in the textile industry as a sizing agent for yarns and fabrics. It is used to increase the tensile strength of the yarns and fabrics, making them more resistant to tearing and breaking.
